WYBA Update

Dear Players and Parents:

I hope this letter finds you well.  I want to keep you informed about our upcoming basketball season. The WYBA, a non-profit run by a volunteer board, is trying hard to meet our mission this year in spite of the difficulties of this pandemic.  Our goal is to provide the youth of Warren and surrounding towns a first class basketball experience.  Your kid’s safety is paramount.  All of our offerings will meet or exceed the Covid-19 safety protocols required by the Governor of NJ.

Unfortunately, the Warren Board of Education is not allowing the use of gym space inside the elementary and middle schools.  Because of this, we had to alter our normal Travel and Recreation basketball experience for the 2020-21 season.

Travel teams will have a season! We are excited that our kids will get to represent Warren Travel this year. Congratulations to those who made the team. Our Teams will join leagues, enter tournaments and get practice space at professional indoor basketball facilities. The WYBA still has our normal fixed costs - insurance, bank and accounting fees, and website maintenance.  In addition, every travel team will pay to join a league, and pay to enter additional tournaments.  In spite of these higher facility costs, we are keeping the costs the same as last year - $325.  We understand the hardship this pandemic has caused our kids, and we want to ensure that they get to play organized basketball.  The WYBA will cover any cost overruns, and in the event our season is cut short due to Covid-19 we will provide prorated refunds.  The head coach of each team is devising the best program to fit the needs of his parents and players.  Ask your head coach for particulars about your season.

Recreation Basketball is proving to be more difficult this year.  Without Warren School Gyms, we won’t be able to have a Rec season for 2020-21.  We should have final word of the Board of Education’s decision in the coming weeks, but we are not hopeful.  To salvage the year, we intend to hold an outdoor Rec. program outside in early Spring. We will post further information as it becomes available.

Thank you for continuing to support Warren Youth Basketball.  As parents in this community, we are working hard to get our kids on the basketball court.  If you have further concerns, contact the WYBA Board at

Thank you,

Vance Gillenwater

President, WYBA

WYBA Recreation Basketball Registration is OPEN!

Recreation registration is now open for the 2020-2021 basketball season.  WYBA Recreation Basketball is open to all 3rd through 8th graders from Warren or Watchung, and all 3rd through 8th grade girls from Green Brook. Due to the uncertainty, we are proceeding with registrations without requiring payment at this time (cost will be $165 if you register prior to the deadline of November 30th else $175).  Payment will be required prior to player participation in practices or games.  For additional information regarding the program, click the link: Recreation

Based on Governor Murphy's latest executive order, indoor basketball games and practices are now allowed with restrictions.
  • Approval by Warren BOE for outside group usage of school gyms is required (decision date unknown)

  •  Executive order issued on October 12th remains in effect unchanged.

  • A significant aspect of the order is that no spectators are allowed.  Only players, coaches, referees and score keeper are allowed in the gym.

  • All Covid safety protocols will be enforced.  WYBA has experience running two clinics utilizing Covid safety protocols as prescribed by state and local agencies and NJSIAA requirements.

WYBA - Covid 19 Impact on 2020-21 Season

Warren Youth Basketball is on for 2020-21

Below is an update from the WYBA Board regarding the impact of Covid 19 on the 2020-21 winter basketball season.

  • The WYBA has been informed that we will not have use of the school gyms until January 2021 (at the earliest).   Therefore, our assumption is that both the recreation and travel seasons will start in January.

  • Over the next month, we will be holding travel tryouts, in compliance with state and local guidelines, at an outdoor location so that teams can be formed.

  • The Board will be opening the registration for recreation players and coaches shortly (October time frame).

  • As with all things these days, this is subject to change based on gym availability and state/local guidelines concerning Covid 19.

  • We will communicate any changes once they are known.

The WYBA will remain as flexible as possible. We will start the season once we have gym availability and can ensure the safety of the players by meeting or exceeding state and local guidelines.  If there are any questions or concerns, please contact the WYBA Board at
